Falls Fire (ORMAF)

Wildfire Status:

The Falls Fire, located approximately 25 miles northwest of Burns, Oregon, has been active since July 10, 2024. As of the latest updates, the fire is reported to have reached 100% containment, with a total area burned of approximately 151,680 acres. The cause of the fire has been determined to be human-related, and it remains under investigation. The fire's management involved multiple agencies, including the Forest Service, Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management, and Oregon State Fire Marshal, who worked collaboratively with Incident Management Teams to implement effective containment strategies.

Initial firefighting efforts faced challenges due to the rugged terrain and accessibility issues, particularly on the eastern flank of the fire. Firefighters employed a full-suppression strategy, utilizing a combination of direct and indirect tactics, as well as point protection to safeguard critical areas. As of August 20, 2024, all evacuation orders in Harney and Grant Counties have been lifted, indicating a significant improvement in the situation. However, the Malheur National Forest remains under a closure order to ensure public safety during ongoing fire suppression operations, with specific campgrounds closed due to proximity to fire activity.
