Wildfire Status:

The Shoe Fly Fire, which began on September 2, 2024, near Girds Creek in Wheeler County, Oregon, has grown to an area of 26,817 acres and is currently 89% contained. The fire was ignited following a series of thunderstorms that resulted in multiple fire reports in the vicinity. A total of 326 personnel are actively engaged in firefighting efforts, with current activities focused on mopping up hot spots and securing the perimeter. Firefighters have achieved a significant milestone, reaching 300 feet of cold black adjacent to much of the fire's perimeter.

Weather conditions have played a crucial role in fire management. The area has experienced slightly above-average temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s, with humidity levels dropping into the upper 20s to mid-30s. However, a large low-pressure system is anticipated to settle over the Pacific Northwest, bringing cooler temperatures and the possibility of scattered rain showers. While the likelihood of beneficial rain has diminished, the increased humidity and cooler temperatures are expected to improve the fire's behavior, reducing activity to minimal creeping and smoldering.

Looking ahead, fire management teams plan to continue mop-up operations and secure the fire lines. The projected fire activity indicates that minimal fire activity is expected in the next 12 to 72 hours due to the rise in fuel moisture levels. The incident command is optimistic about achieving full containment by September 22, 2024, as the conditions become increasingly favorable for suppression efforts.
