Wildfire Status:

The Shoe Fly Fire, which started on September 2, 2024, near Girds Creek in Wheeler County, Oregon, has currently burned approximately 26,817 acres and is 89% contained. Firefighters have made significant progress in controlling the blaze, with containment efforts focusing on securing and improving the fire line, particularly in the Gird’s Creek area and around Baldy Mountain. As of the latest updates, there are about 326 personnel actively engaged in firefighting efforts, with an estimated containment date set for September 22, 2024.

The response from fire agencies has been robust, involving local resources, landowners, rangeland associations, and fire districts during the initial attack. The Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 1 was put in charge of the incident shortly after it was reported. Firefighters are currently engaged in mop-up operations, targeting a 300-foot perimeter around the fire to eliminate any remaining hot spots. Weather conditions have aided these efforts, with higher humidity and cooler temperatures expected to contribute positively to fire suppression.

Current weather patterns are characterized by a zonal flow from the west, maintaining temperatures in the mid-60s to low-70s, which is slightly above seasonal averages. Afternoon humidity levels have been recorded in the upper 20s to mid-30s, with northwest winds gusting up to 20 mph. While a low-pressure system is anticipated to bring cooler temperatures and scattered rain showers, the chances of significant rainfall have decreased. This weather shift is expected to help mitigate fire activity, as the cooler conditions will lead to higher humidity levels, aiding firefighters in their containment efforts. Overall, the situation remains dynamic, but the combination of effective firefighting strategies and favorable weather is contributing to a hopeful outlook for full containment soon.
