Wildfire Status:
The Fossil Complex, consisting of the Canyon, Holmes, Two Cabin, Kinzua, and Service Fires, has currently burned a total of 24,446 acres in Oregon, predominantly through tall grass and timber. As of now, the fire is 100% contained, with ongoing mop-up operations and suppression repair efforts being conducted by the Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 3, which took command on September 19, 2024. Fire activity has significantly decreased, with minimal smoldering reported, although heavy fuels continue to burn within the fire's interior.
Weather conditions in the area are currently a concern, with unseasonably warm and dry conditions persisting. However, a strong cold front is expected to move through the region, bringing breezy to windy conditions along with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Relative humidity levels are predicted to be low, particularly in eastern Oregon, which could elevate fire weather conditions. Nevertheless, a cooling trend is anticipated following the cold front, which may help mitigate fire risks in the coming days.
Fire personnel, totaling 329, remain vigilant and ready to respond to any flare-ups, with resources on standby for any ignitions that may occur from pockets of unburned fuels. The incident's cause is still under investigation, and the management teams are focusing on ensuring that the fire remains contained and that the area is restored post-incident. The long-term outlook suggests a continuation of cooler temperatures and higher humidity, which could further assist in the suppression efforts.
