Fossil Complex (OR95S)

Wildfire Status:

The Fossil Complex wildfire, currently active in Oregon, spans approximately 24,446 acres and is composed of several fires, including the Canyon, Holmes, Two Cabin, Kinzua, and Service Fires. As of September 19, 2024, the fire is reported to have 68% of its perimeter contained. The Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 2 has taken command of the situation, focusing on suppression efforts and the safety of the surrounding communities.

Firefighting efforts are ongoing, with a total of 1,020 personnel deployed to manage the incident. Recent operations have included mop-up activities to eliminate hotspots and mitigate hazards posed by weakened trees. Despite some rain recently providing moisture to the area, there are still pockets of smoldering fuel that require attention to prevent flare-ups. Ground and aerial resources remain on standby to respond to any potential ignitions within the fire perimeter.

Current weather conditions are favorable for firefighting, with temperatures in the mid-40s during the morning and peaking around 70 degrees in the afternoon. Relative humidity is reported to be in the lower to mid-40s, and light winds are expected, with isolated gusts up to 14 mph. However, as the week progresses, a warming trend is anticipated, which may lead to lower humidity levels and increased fire activity. Fire officials are continuously monitoring these conditions and adjusting their strategies accordingly in order to maintain control over the wildfire.
