Wildfire Status:

The Fossil Complex, consisting of the Canyon, Holmes, Two Cabin, Kinzua, and Service Fires, currently spans 24,446 acres and is actively burning in areas of tall grass and timber. As of September 26, 2024, the fire is reported to be 100% contained, with ongoing efforts focused on suppression repair and mop-up operations. The Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team 3 has taken command of the incident, managing a total of 329 personnel working towards the complete extinguishment of any remaining hotspots.

Recent weather conditions have posed challenges to fire suppression efforts. While temperatures are expected to remain in the high 40s with good humidity recovery overnight, a low-pressure system is anticipated to bring high winds with minimal rain over the next 24 hours, creating elevated fire weather conditions. Isolated thunderstorms may also occur, adding to the complexity of firefighting. Following this period of increased risk, a cooling trend is expected, which should help reduce fire activity.

Currently, the fire's significant events have been minimal, with only smoldering and some heavy fuels continuing to burn. The Fossil Complex includes various smaller fires, with the Service Fire being the largest at approximately 23,890 acres. The incident remains under close monitoring as fire agencies prepare for any potential flare-ups while focusing on repairing the damage caused by the fire.
