Rush Fire (OKWMR)

Wildfire Status:

The Rush Fire, which began on October 24, 2024, in Comanche County, Oklahoma, has burned approximately 12,488 acres, with 87% of its perimeter currently contained. The fire primarily affects the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, with only around 400 acres impacted on private land. As of November 2, 2024, the Southern Area Red Complex Incident Command Team is managing the suppression efforts, having taken command on October 28. The team is focused on protecting life and property while coordinating with community partners. The estimated containment date for the fire is set for November 8, 2024.

Firefighting efforts have involved approximately 200 personnel who are employing strategies to manage the ongoing fire behavior, which has largely been limited to creeping and smoldering, with minimal active fire spread. The fuels involved include timber, tall grass, and brush, exacerbated by extended periods of drought. While conditions have been relatively stable, the situation remains dynamic, with heavy fuels and unburned areas still posing challenges.

Weather conditions are becoming a significant concern as a major storm system approaches the region. High temperatures in the 70s and light southeast winds are expected to give way to showers and storms, bringing potential heavy rainfall of 3-6 inches by Monday morning. This could lead to flash flooding, especially around the burn scar where the soil's ability to absorb water is compromised. Firefighters are preparing for these weather changes while continuing suppression repair efforts along the eastern side of the fire.
