Rush Fire (OKWMR)

Wildfire Status:

The Rush Fire, which ignited on October 24, 2024, in Comanche County, Oklahoma, is currently under management primarily within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. As of November 2, 2024, the fire has burned approximately 12,488 acres, with 87% of its perimeter contained. The Southern Area Red Complex Incident Command Team has taken over command to effectively coordinate firefighting efforts and ensure the protection of life and property. The estimated containment date for the fire is projected for November 8, 2024.

Firefighting efforts are bolstered by around 200 personnel actively working to manage the situation. Despite the extensive area affected, the fire behavior has primarily been characterized by minimal activity, with most of the fire exhibiting creeping and smoldering characteristics. The terrain consists of timber, tall grass, and brush, with unburned riparian areas continuing to burn internally. Suppression repair operations are underway, particularly along the eastern edge of the fire.

Weather conditions are currently concerning as a major storm system approaches the region. High temperatures are expected to be in the 70s, accompanied by light southeast winds. However, the forecast predicts heavy rainfall beginning Saturday, with total accumulations potentially reaching 3-6 inches by Monday morning. This poses a risk of flash flooding, particularly in areas around the burn scar, where the soil may struggle to absorb the rainfall. Following the storm, drier conditions are anticipated early next week, which may aid in further containment efforts.
