  • UPDATE AUG. 11 @ NOON: Initially, aviation resources dropped fire retardant aiming to slow the fire's progress and lessen the intense heat so that ground crews could approach. Overnight the fire burned within the controlled area created by the retardant. Today, fire crews continue to construct and enhance control lines around the fire and use aviation resources to maintain the established lines.
  • UPDATED AUG. 11 @ 2 p.m.: An emergency area closure has been put in place for the safety of the public and firefighters suppressing the Trough Springs Fire on the Springs Mountains National Recreation near Las Vegas.The area that is closed starts from Wheeler Pass Road (Forest Service Road 45601) west of where it intersects with Cougar Springs Road (Forest Service Road 45601H) all the way to the National Recreation Area border on Wheeler Pass Road. Forest Service Roads closed include 455601, 45556A, 45556, and 45556G. This order is in effect from Aug. 11 to 16 or until rescinded.   • UPDATE, AUG 11 @ 8 p.m.: The Trough Springs Fire is now 236 acres, but still remains within the controlled area created by the initial retardant lines. Acreage increased due to better mapping. Fire crews made great headway in constructing and enhancing the control lines around the fire. Aviation resources was used to maintain the established lines. 
  • UPDATE, AUG 13 @ 7 p.m.:The Tro Trough Springs Fire remains at 236 acres and is now 20 percent contained as of Tuesday, Aug. 13. An emergency area closure is in place for the safety of both the public and firefighters.   • UPDATE AUG 16 @ 1p.m.: The Trough Springs Fire will be 90 percent contained as of 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16 and the emergency area closure will also end at midnight. Firefighters recently walked the boundary of the fire to map it, and they determined the final size to be 197 acres. For the safety of the 75 firefighters still working on the fire, the public is asked to use caution when recreating in the formerly closed area by staying out of the burned areas and driving slowly on Forest Service Roads.
