Big Hollow Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Big Hollow Fire, which ignited on August 23, 2024, approximately 13 miles west of Grant, Montana, has now reached 100% containment as of September 3, 2024. The fire, which spanned 3,449 acres, was suspected to have been caused by lightning, though the exact cause remains undetermined. Fire management has transitioned to a Type 5 Incident Command structure, indicating that the fire is no longer actively burning. Current fire behavior is low, with any activity limited to the interior of the fire area.

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, along with a total of 75 personnel, are actively monitoring the site. Their planned actions include periodic patrols to observe for any increase in fire behavior, although the potential for significant spread is minimal at this time. Firefighters have been utilizing specialized equipment, such as skidgines, to suppress any remaining hotspots in remote locations.

Weather conditions in the area currently present some concerns, particularly due to thunderstorms and high wind speeds. These conditions could potentially influence fire behavior, although the forecast indicates minimal potential for spread.
