Horse Gulch Fire (MTHLF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horse Gulch Fire, which began on July 9, 2024, is currently active and has exhibited rapid growth, particularly on July 10 and 11. It is situated about 5 miles south of York and 2 miles north of Canyon Ferry, in an area characterized by dense timber and heavy dead and down fuels. As of the latest reports, fire behavior remains very active, prompting significant firefighting efforts and a comprehensive response from various fire agencies.

In response to the fire, the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest has implemented road and area closures to safeguard public safety. These closures encompass specific Forest Service system roads and trails within the fire perimeter. Notably, several trails, including those in the Townsend and Helena Ranger Districts, have been closed to the public. The closures are designed to restrict access to areas where firefighting operations are ongoing and to protect individuals from potential hazards associated with the fire.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has recently rescinded all closures related to the Horse Gulch Fire, indicating some progress in managing the incident.
