Pentagon Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Pentagon Fire, which began on July 24, 2024, after being ignited by lightning from a dry thunderstorm, is currently situated approximately 45 miles southeast of Bigfork, Montana. The fire has burned an estimated 62 acres in steep, rocky, and rugged terrain near the Spotted Bear River, specifically between Lime Creek and Wall Creek. As of the latest reports, the fire is not impacting the Continental Divide Trail, although it is close to alternative routes, and a closure order may be implemented if fire activity escalates.
In response to the fire, fire management teams have prioritized the safety of the public and firefighters while preserving the landscape characteristics of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Firefighters began their operations on August 3, using a Type 2 helicopter for support, which included conducting bucket work to help control the fire's spread. They have successfully completed protective measures around the historic Pentagon Cabin Administrative Site, including wrapping the buildings in fire-resistant material and reducing nearby fuels.
Weather conditions have played a significant role in the fire's current status. Following several wetting rain events, fire activity has markedly diminished, with only a single smoke plume observed within the perimeter during the latest reconnaissance flight on August 10. Currently, no personnel are stationed on-site, but fire managers continue to conduct aerial monitoring for any changes in fire behavior. The estimated containment date is set for October 31, 2024, although updates will not be provided unless there is a significant change in fire activity.
