Pentagon Fire (MTFNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Pentagon Fire, currently active in Montana, has grown to an estimated 62 acres, burning in steep and rugged terrain approximately 0.5 miles south of the Pentagon Cabin Administrative Site. The fire was ignited by lightning during a dry thunderstorm on July 24, and while its presence was detected on August 2, fire activity has since diminished significantly due to multiple wetting rain events. As of the latest reports, the fire is not impacting the Continental Divide Trail but is located near alternative routes, with potential closure orders on the horizon if conditions worsen.

Fire management teams are focusing on protecting critical values at risk while ensuring public and responder safety. As of August 3, firefighters initiated point protection operations at the Pentagon Cabin, supported by a Type 2 helicopter that helped control the fire's spread. Recent weather conditions, including rainfall, have aided firefighting efforts, resulting in only a single smoke observation within the fire perimeter during the latest reconnaissance flight on August 10. Firefighters have since exited the immediate area after successfully wrapping historic buildings with fire-resistant materials.

Currently, the fire is not contained, and the personnel assigned to the incident is limited to five individuals. Fire managers are continuing aerial reconnaissance to monitor the situation, with the estimated containment date set for October 31, 2024. Updates on the fire's status will only be provided if fire activity increases, reflecting the current low-level threat to nearby structures and the environment.
