Jenkins Creek Fire
Wildfire Status:
The Jenkins Creek Fire, which ignited on May 12, 2025, near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, has burned approximately 16,490 acres and is currently 98% contained. The fire's rapid expansion was fueled by high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, particularly impacting areas of mixed boreal forest and grasslands, exacerbated by infestations of spruce budworm. Firefighters initially faced extreme conditions, including crown fires and rapid spread, but improvements in weather conditions and tactical responses allowed containment efforts to progress effectively.
As of now, a National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) team is managing the incident, having taken over from the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team. Firefighting resources deployed include hand crews, engines, bulldozers, and aerial support, with efforts concentrated on full suppression, structure protection, and establishing containment lines. Following a brief period of extreme fire behavior, the situation has stabilized, and firefighters successfully built containment lines that held through subsequent wind events.
Evacuations that were previously in place have been lifted, although some recreation sites and roads within the Superior National Forest remain closed. Community support, including assistance from organizations like the Red Cross and United Way, has been crucial in providing aid to displaced residents and supporting firefighting operations. The ongoing efforts focus on ensuring the safety of the area and preventing any further spread of the wildfire.
