Summit Lake (MIOTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Summit Lake Fire, located in the northwest corner of the McCormick Wilderness in Baraga County, Michigan, was discovered by aerial surveillance on October 18, 2024. As of November 15, 2024, the fire is reported to be 100% contained after burning an estimated area of 328 acres. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the incident prompted temporary closure orders for the northern half of the wilderness, which were lifted on November 6.

Fire agencies, including the Forest Service Type 5 organization, have successfully managed the situation, utilizing support from local private landowners and the Ottawa National Forest staff, who provided essential access and staging areas. The terrain was noted to be difficult to navigate due to wet and slippery conditions, primarily due to recent weather changes, including rain and snow. Cooler temperatures have also contributed to the containment efforts, creating favorable conditions for firefighters.

Current weather conditions are characterized by cooler temperatures, with rain and snow having fallen in the area, which has assisted in suppressing the fire. The mixed hardwood and conifer forests in the area were the fuels involved in the fire. As the situation stabilizes, fire agencies continue to monitor the area, ensuring that the fire remains contained and that any potential flare-ups are swiftly addressed.
