Summit Lake (MIOTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Summit Lake Fire, located in the remote area of the McCormick Wilderness in Baraga County, Michigan, was discovered on October 18, 2024. As of November 15, 2024, the fire is reported to be 100% contained, with a total area affected of approximately 328 acres. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire's containment was achieved thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Michigan Interagency Type III Incident Management Team, local landowners, and the Ottawa National Forest staff, who provided essential support and access through private lands.

Currently, the area is experiencing cooler temperatures along with recent rain and snow, which have contributed to the containment efforts. The terrain remains challenging due to wet and slippery conditions, making ground operations difficult. As of November 6, 2024, the temporary closure order for the northern half of the McCormick Wilderness was lifted, allowing for increased public access to the area once again.

Fire agencies have been actively managing the situation since the fire's discovery, implementing strategies to contain the flames and protect the surrounding wilderness. The mix of hardwood and conifer fuels in the area posed unique challenges, but with the recent weather changes, the risk of flare-ups has been significantly reduced. The focus now shifts towards monitoring the area for any potential smoldering hotspots while ensuring the safety of fire crews and the public.
