Summit Lake (MIOTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Summit Lake Fire, located in the northwest corner of the McCormick Wilderness in Baraga County, Michigan, was discovered on October 18, 2024. As of November 15, 2024, the fire has been declared 100% contained after burning an estimated 328 acres. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the area affected is characterized by a mix of hardwood and coniferous trees.

In response to the fire, a Forest Service Type 5 organization managed the incident, with significant support from local private landowners and the Ottawa National Forest staff. Their collaboration was crucial in providing access and staging areas, which greatly aided firefighting efforts. As of November 6, 2024, the temporary closure order for the northern half of the McCormick Wilderness was lifted, allowing for the reopening of the area to the public.

Current weather conditions in the region have improved for firefighting efforts, with cooler temperatures accompanied by rain and snow, which helped mitigate the fire's spread. However, the terrain remains wet and slippery, posing challenges for access and movement in the area. Overall, the successful containment of the Summit Lake Fire reflects the effective coordination and resources mobilized by fire agencies and local stakeholders.
