Wildfire Status:

The Chimney Fire, currently burning approximately 9 miles northwest of Fairfield, Idaho, has grown to cover an area of 6,521 acres. As of now, 80% of the fire's perimeter is contained, with the incident management team anticipating a complete containment by October 15, 2024. The fire is not threatening any structures and is situated a safe distance from communities. Most of its growth occurred in the initial days following its ignition on September 2, 2024, which was caused by natural lightning.

Firefighting efforts are being managed by a local Type 3 incident management team, which took over command on September 19, 2024. Currently, there are 22 personnel actively working on the fire. The primary objectives include holding the fire north of Lime Creek Road while providing protection for infrastructure and other values at risk. The rugged terrain poses challenges, and there are concerns that the fire may impact grazing allotments, sage grouse habitats, and recreation trails as it continues to burn.

Weather conditions are expected to play a significant role in the fire's behavior. Warmer and drier conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, could potentially increase the fire's spread. Fire officials have noted that with the rising temperatures and drying air, there may be increased visibility of interior smoke from areas such as Fairfield and Highway 20. However, minimal to no growth of the fire is anticipated in the coming days, which offers some reassurance as firefighting efforts continue.
