Chimney Fire (IDEIX)

Wildfire Status:

The Chimney Fire, currently burning approximately 9 miles northwest of Fairfield, Idaho, has consumed 6,521 acres and is 80% contained. As of September 25, 2024, the situation on the fire front is stable, with minimal growth expected due to cooler temperatures and moisture, although some interior smoke may be visible from nearby areas. The fire is not threatening any structures or communities at this time, and most of its growth occurred during the early days of the incident. The rugged terrain has posed challenges, but the fire is primarily affecting grazing allotments and sage grouse habitat.

In response to the fire, a local Type 3 incident management team took command on September 19, 2024, from the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 4. Current personnel on-site total 22, focusing on holding the fire north of Lime Creek Road and providing point protection for infrastructure at risk. The objectives include completing rehabilitation efforts and transitioning management to a Type 4 incident team, anticipated to occur on September 26, 2024.

Weather conditions are becoming a concern, with forecasts indicating warmer and drier conditions that could increase the fire's spread potential. Firefighters are closely monitoring these changes, as gusty winds may also contribute to more active fire behavior. However, predictions suggest minimal to no growth in the coming days, which provides a hopeful outlook for containment efforts as they continue to manage this wildfire effectively.
