Chimney Fire (IDEIX)

Wildfire Status:

The Chimney Fire, located approximately nine miles northwest of Fairfield, Idaho, is currently burning across 6,521 acres with 80% of its perimeter contained. The fire, which ignited due to natural causes on September 2, 2024, is not currently threatening any structures, as it remains a safe distance from nearby communities. Most of the fire's growth occurred in the initial days, and while it has the potential to impact grazing allotments, sage grouse habitats, and recreational trails, fire management objectives focus on holding the fire north of Lime Creek Road and protecting critical infrastructure.

Firefighting efforts are being coordinated by a local Type 3 incident management team, which took command on September 19, 2024. Currently, 22 personnel are engaged in managing the situation, focusing on rehabilitation and the transition to a Type 4 incident. The outlook for the next few days suggests minimal to no growth in the fire's activity, although increased temperatures and drying conditions may lead to visible smoke from the fire, particularly along Highway 20 and in the Fairfield area.

Weather conditions are a significant concern, as warmer and drier conditions combined with gusty winds could enhance fire spread potential. Fire managers are monitoring these factors closely to ensure the safety of personnel and the surrounding environment. The anticipated containment date for the Chimney Fire is set for October 15, 2024, with ongoing evaluations of fire behavior and potential impacts.
