Chimney Fire (IDEIX)

Wildfire Status:

The Chimney Fire, located approximately nine miles northwest of Fairfield, Idaho, has burned approximately 6,519 acres and is currently 71% contained. The fire, which started on September 2, 2024, is not threatening any structures and remains at a safe distance from nearby communities. The majority of fire growth occurred in the initial days of the incident, and while it is currently exhibiting minimal activity, there is potential for it to impact grazing allotments and sage grouse habitats in the surrounding areas.

Firefighting efforts are being managed by the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 4, which has deployed around 220 personnel to the scene. Their objectives include holding the fire north of Lime Creek Road and ensuring point protection of infrastructure and other values at risk. The team is actively monitoring the fire's edge, particularly in critical divisions, and conducting suppression repair work to mitigate future risks.

Recent weather conditions have contributed positively to containment efforts, with increased humidity and precipitation helping to suppress fire activity. This trend is expected to continue in the short term, reducing the likelihood of further spread. However, approaching warmer and drier conditions, coupled with gusty winds, may elevate the risk again if not managed carefully. The estimated date for full containment is projected for October 15, 2024, and firefighting teams remain vigilant as they address the evolving situation.
