Sowbelly Fire
Wildfire Status:
The South Rim wildfire at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has rapidly escalated since its ignition on July 10, 2025, and currently spans approximately 1,640 acres with 0% of its perimeter contained. The fire is exhibiting aggressive behavior, characterized by active flames, short-range spotting, and torching, prompting immediate evacuation measures. Montrose County has issued an evacuation order for all residents of Bostwick Park, and both Highway 347 and K73 Trail have been closed to the public.
Firefighters are currently focused on structure protection as the fire's behavior intensifies. Aircraft are on standby, ready to deploy retardant and water to combat the flames effectively. Park officials are urging the public to avoid traveling to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which is now closed due to the fire.
Weather conditions are contributing to the fire's growth, with red flag warnings in effect due to gusty winds, low humidity, and dry fuels. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s, with relative humidity levels dropping to the teens. These conditions pose ongoing challenges for firefighting efforts as crews work to secure the area and protect at-risk structures. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
