Canyon Fire (CASTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Canyon Fire, which ignited on August 8, 2024, near Buchanan Road about a mile from Tuolumne City, California, has now reached 100% containment as of August 14, 2024. The fire burned through steep and rocky terrain within the North Fork of the Tuolumne River Canyon, covering an area of approximately 80 acres. Fire crews aggressively engaged with the blaze, employing defensive burning techniques to protect nearby homes. Air support was instrumental in keeping the fire under control, and after an initial period of growth, the size has stabilized for over 36 hours.

Fire management has been organized under unified command, with CAL FIRE and the Stanislaus National Forest working closely to ensure safety for both firefighters and the public. Following the successful containment of the fire, evacuation orders have been lifted, and the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office exited the unified command on August 11. Although Buchanan Road has reopened for public use, the Westside Trail remains closed until August 21 due to potential hazards from rolling rocks, debris, and falling trees.

Current weather conditions pose challenges, with high temperatures reaching the 90s and very low humidity levels in the canyon area. Fire personnel will continue patrolling the affected region in the coming days to monitor for any potential flare-ups and will focus on mopping up operations to establish a safe buffer zone adjacent to the containment lines. The fire's cause is still under investigation, but with low fire activity projected and effective management in place, the threat to surrounding communities has significantly diminished.
