Canyon Fire (CASTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Canyon Fire, which ignited on August 8, 2024, near Buchanan Road about a mile from Tuolumne City, California, has now reached 100% containment as of August 14, 2024. The fire burned in steep and rocky terrain within the canyon of the North Fork of the Tuolumne River, impacting approximately 80 acres. Fire crews initially reported the size as 85 acres but revised it to 80 acres following more accurate mapping. Despite some initial growth, the fire’s spread was effectively managed through aggressive firefighting efforts, including defensive burning and air support.

The response from fire agencies was robust, with CAL FIRE and the Stanislaus National Forest working under unified command to ensure both firefighter and public safety. With the evacuation orders lifted, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office stepped away from unified command on August 11, 2024. The primary focus of the firefighting teams was to protect life and property, and they will continue to patrol the area in the coming days to monitor for any flare-ups.

Current weather conditions are concerning, as high temperatures in the 90s, combined with very low relative humidity, pose ongoing challenges for fire personnel. The terrain's southern exposure within the Tuolumne River Canyon is particularly vulnerable. Although the fire is contained, officials have advised against using the Westside Trail due to hazards such as rolling rocks, debris, and fallen trees, with an estimated reopening date of August 21, 2024. Firefighters will continue patrolling and mopping up operations to maintain the containment lines and ensure the area remains secure.
