Latest update
This will be the final update for the Horse Fire unless significant activity occurs.
Firefighters reached 100% containment on the Horse Fire as of Thursday morning July 10, 2025. The fire is located near Schell Mountain, west of Lakehead Ca., in the 2018 Carr Fire footprint. Firefighters are engaging in a full suppression strategy, with firefighter safety our top priority. The fire remains mapped at 385 acres and observed fire behavior has been minimal. The fire has been downgraded to a Type 4 incident and a new incident commander has assumed command.
INITIAL SITUATION: The Horse Fire started following widespread thunderstorms and lightning on the afternoon and evening of June 30, 2025. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest saw more than 3,100 lightning strikes across the Forest, between June 30 and July 2, resulting in several wildfires. (Wildfire information for other current incidents on the Shasta-Trinity).
HOW CAN YOU HELP: The Forest Service is asking the public to stay clear of the area of the Horse Fire. Roads leading to the fire footprint are narrow, and there is significant traffic including large trucks and water tenders traveling these routes. The public can also expect significant fire response traffic throughout the forest as crews support efforts on other fires or respond to new incidents.
