McDonald Fire (AKMID)

Wildfire Status:

The McDonald Fire, which ignited on June 8, 2024, is currently active and has consumed approximately 148,823 acres in Alaska's BLM Military Fire Management Zone. This area is classified for limited suppression, meaning the fire is allowed to burn naturally unless it threatens property or human life. The fire has reached the banks of the Tanana River, where pockets of unburned fuel remain, presenting ongoing challenges for containment. As of now, the fire is not contained, and local authorities have issued evacuation preparations for areas south of Salcha along the Richardson Highway.

Firefighting efforts are being focused on monitoring burnout operations near the 5 Mile Creek cabins, as well as constructing a contingency fireline on the west side of these cabins. To safeguard military infrastructure, firefighters have removed hazardous fuels and set up sprinklers, pumps, and hoses. The management of the McDonald Fire has expanded to include the nearby Clear Fire, which merged with McDonald Fire on June 26, 2024, necessitating a coordinated response from fire agencies.

As of July 12, 2024, the incident is being overseen by the Idaho Team 1 IMT 3, which took command from the BLM Alaska Fire Service. There are currently 93 personnel engaged in firefighting efforts, with an estimated containment date projected for October 1, 2024. The fire is fueled by a mix of timber and hardwood litter, which continues to pose a threat to the surrounding areas. Fire managers are closely monitoring weather conditions, which can significantly impact fire behavior and spread.
