La Bonte Fire (WYHPD)

Wildfire Status:

The La Bonte Fire, currently burning in steep and rugged terrain approximately 6 miles west of Esterbrook and 20 miles south of Douglas, Wyoming, has reached a size of 3,484 acres with 55% containment as of September 19, 2024. The fire was first reported on September 12, and its cause remains undetermined. Firefighting crews have been making progress in containing the fire, aided by cooler temperatures; however, challenging weather conditions, including high winds, have complicated suppression efforts.

Firefighting resources deployed to combat the La Bonte Fire include 2 fire modules, 4 hand crews, 4 engines, 4 helicopters, and 2 dozers, totaling approximately 137 personnel on site. The current suppression efforts focus on maintaining the fire's footprint by mopping up hot spots, patrolling dozer lines, and ensuring the contained perimeter remains secure. Helicopters are also prepared to conduct bucket drops to help manage fire behavior, while crews are concentrating on constructing direct lines in the rugged western flank of the fire.

Looking ahead, weather conditions are expected to remain dry with gusty winds of 20-30 mph persisting through Thursday and Friday. However, there is an increase in the likelihood of precipitation as the weekend approaches, which may aid firefighting efforts.
