Double Springs Fire Active 2026

The Double Springs Fire is a lightning-caused wildfire burning approximately 21 miles southeast of Challis, Idaho, in the Christian Gulch area of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The fire was detected on July 24, 2026, and is burning in steep, rugged terrain with heavy timber, dead and down fuels, and limited road access.

Since the fire was discovered, firefighters have implemented a full suppression strategy focused on protecting firefighter and public safety while minimizing fire growth. Due to the steep slopes, loose shale, and challenging terrain, suppression efforts have relied on a combination of existing road systems, natural barriers, and strategically constructed containment lines rather than direct attack in some portions of the fire.

Throughout the incident, weather conditions have played a significant role in fire behavior. Periods of hot temperatures, low relative humidity, and gusty winds have resulted in increased fire activity, while cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and overnight inversions have moderated fire behavior and allowed crews to strengthen containment lines and improve access into the fire area.

As the incident has evolved, additional firefighting resources have been assigned, and the fire transitioned to a Type 3 Incident Management Organization to support ongoing suppression operations.
