Manderson Fire (SDPRA)

Wildfire Status:

The Manderson Fire, located north of Manderson, South Dakota, is currently 95% contained, with fire crews working diligently to fully extinguish the incident. As of September 18, 2024, the total area affected is approximately 2,075 acres. The Nevada Team 3 - Type 3 Incident Management Team is scheduled to transition control of the fire back to local authorities on September 19, 2024, at 0600 hours. However, two engines will remain on-site to assist with ongoing mop-up operations as minimal hot spots were detected.

In terms of personnel, there are currently 10 firefighters actively engaged in the firefighting efforts. The fire's origin was reported on September 12, 2024, and while the exact cause remains undetermined, extensive efforts have been made to manage the situation effectively. Fire crews have received considerable support from the Pine Ridge BIA Agency and surrounding communities, which has been acknowledged by the incident management team.

Weather conditions are projected to change over the coming days, with Thursday and Friday expected to be warmer and drier than initially forecasted. This is part of a cooldown trend anticipated for the weekend, which will be monitored closely as it may affect fire behavior and suppression efforts. Firefighters continue to remain vigilant, ensuring that the fire is completely extinguished before fully transitioning control back to local management.
