Milepost 98 (ORUPF)

Wildfire Status:

The Milepost 98 wildfire, located approximately one mile south of Canyonville, Oregon, has reached a size of 250 acres and is currently 100% contained as of September 16, 2024. The fire, which ignited on September 5, 2024, was determined to have been caused by human activity. Fire agencies have deployed a total of 35 personnel to manage the situation, and although there has been minimal fire activity recently, some smoldering is still observed in the heavier fuels within the fire's interior.

Fire response efforts have been effective, leading to significant reductions in fire activity due to high overnight relative humidity, light rainfall, and proactive suppression measures. The incident has been characterized by light logging slash and timber litter as the dominant fuels, and no further perimeter growth is anticipated. Planned actions include a thorough gridding and mop-up procedure to secure the fire lines and implement erosion control measures.

Current weather conditions have contributed positively to firefighting efforts. This morning saw scattered showers that provided cool and damp conditions, with light rain accumulating in some areas. Although the rain diminished by the afternoon, cooler temperatures and high humidity persisted throughout the day. More precipitation is expected on Monday, which will further aid in maintaining the containment of the fire. The estimated date for complete containment is set for September 20, 2024.
