Wildfire Status:
The Middle Fork Fire, located in Crater Lake National Park, has reached a size of 5,286 acres and is currently 70% contained. As of September 17, 2024, the command of the incident has been returned to the park staff after successful fire-suppression activities. Damage to infrastructure and the surrounding landscape from these activities has been addressed, and recent reconnaissance flights have shown no smoke from lingering heat sources within the fire's interior. Fire behavior is minimal, characterized mainly by smoldering pockets of duff and stump holes, which indicates that the fire is not expected to become active or grow further.
In terms of response, the fire is currently unstaffed but will continue to be monitored by Crater Lake National Park fire personnel. Suppression-repair operations have been completed, and no additional work is planned at this time. The park remains open to the public, although three trails are closed due to fire-related concerns.
Weather conditions are favorable for fire containment, with showers expected to continue overnight and into Wednesday before clearing up around noon. Winds are anticipated to shift back to the northwest at 5-10 mph. A warming and drying trend is expected to commence on Thursday as high pressure builds, leading to more typical seasonal weather conditions. Fuel moisture levels are currently too high to support any significant fire spread, contributing to the overall stability of the situation.
