Middle Fork Fire (ORCLP)

Wildfire Status:

The Middle Fork Fire, located in Crater Lake National Park, has reached 5,286 acres and is currently 70% contained. As of September 17, 2024, command of the fire has transitioned back to the park's staff following the completion of fire suppression activities. Damage caused by these activities has been repaired, and recent reconnaissance flights have detected no smoke from lingering heat sources. The fire is not expected to become active or grow, leading to its unstaffed status while it continues to be monitored.

Fire behavior is currently minimal, characterized by smoldering pockets of duff and stump holes. The predominant fuel type in the area includes mixed conifer timber, with litter, understory, and considerable dead and down materials. With fuel moisture levels remaining high, the likelihood of significant fire spread or danger is low. No additional work is planned as the suppression-repair operations have been completed.

Current weather conditions are favorable, with showers expected to continue overnight and into the following day, clearing around noon. Winds are anticipated to shift to the northwest at 5-10 mph. A warming and drying trend is expected as high pressure builds, which will result in more seasonable conditions. Although Crater Lake National Park is open to visitors, there are three fire-related trail closures in effect, and inquiries regarding the fire can be directed to Public Affairs Officer Marsha McCabe.
