Wildfire Status:

The Middle Fork Fire, located within Crater Lake National Park, has been under the management of the California Interagency Incident Management Team 14 but was returned to park staff on September 17, 2024. Currently, the fire has burned approximately 5,286 acres and is 70% contained. The fire behavior has been minimal, characterized by smoldering pockets of duff and stump holes, and reconnaissance flights have shown no smoke from lingering heat sources. As a precaution, the area continues to be monitored, but the fire is not expected to grow or become active again.

Fire suppression efforts have successfully repaired damage to infrastructure and the landscape, and no additional suppression work is planned at this stage. The current weather conditions are favorable for containment, with high fuel moisture levels reducing the likelihood of fire spread. Recent weather updates indicate that showers are expected to continue, followed by a shift to clearer conditions, with northwest winds of 5-10 mph anticipated. A warming and drying trend is expected to begin shortly, leading to more typical seasonal weather.

Crater Lake National Park remains open to visitors, although three fire-related trail closures are currently in effect. For further information regarding the incident, inquiries can be directed to the park’s Public Affairs Officer, Marsha McCabe. Overall, while the Middle Fork Fire posed significant challenges, the current situation indicates it is under control and being carefully monitored.
