Wildfire Status:
The Middle Fork Fire, located in Crater Lake National Park, currently encompasses an area of 5,286 acres and is 70% contained. As of September 17, 2024, the California Interagency Incident Management Team 14 has returned command of the incident to the park's staff. Fire-suppression activities have concluded, and repairs to damaged infrastructure and the landscape are complete. Recent reconnaissance flights have detected no smoke from lingering heat sources within the fire's interior, and the fire is not expected to become active or grow. Consequently, it has been unstaffed but will continue to be monitored.
Fire behavior has been minimal, characterized by smoldering deep pockets of duff and stump holes. Planned actions include ongoing monitoring by Crater Lake National Park fire personnel, with no further work planned as suppression-repair operations have been finished. The current weather conditions are favorable, with showers expected to continue overnight and clearing by noon on Wednesday. Winds are forecasted to shift to the northwest at 5-10 mph. A warming and drying trend is anticipated to start on Thursday, aligning with more seasonable conditions.
Although Crater Lake National Park remains open, three trails have been closed due to fire-related concerns.
