Wildfire Status:

The Middle Fork Fire, located in Crater Lake National Park, has been under control with 70% of its perimeter contained as of September 19, 2024. The fire, which began on July 17, 2024, has burned approximately 5,286 acres. After the California Interagency Incident Management Team 14 returned command of the incident to local park authorities on September 17, fire suppression activities have concluded, and repairs to infrastructure and the landscape have been completed. Recent reconnaissance flights have detected no smoke from lingering heat sources, and the fire is not expected to become active or grow further.

Currently, the fire is unstaffed but will continue to be monitored by Crater Lake National Park fire staff. Fuel moisture levels are too high for any notable fire spread, contributing to the overall stabilization of the situation. While Crater Lake National Park remains open to visitors, three fire-related trail closures are in effect. For ongoing updates and information, visitors can contact Public Affairs Officer Marsha McCabe.

Weather conditions are also favorable for fire containment. As of the last update, showers were expected to continue overnight, with winds shifting to the northwest at 5-10 mph. A warming and drying trend is anticipated as high pressure builds, leading to more seasonable weather. This combination of stable conditions and effective fire management has led to a significant reduction in fire activity, ensuring the safety of the area while allowing for careful monitoring of any remaining heat sources.
