Indios Wildfire
Wildfire Status:
The Indios Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire, is currently active in the Coyote Ranger District, approximately seven miles north of Coyote, New Mexico, within the Chama River Canyon Wilderness. As of June 17, 2024, the fire has consumed an area of approximately 11,500 acres, with 90% of its perimeter contained. Fire crews have been focusing on minimizing the fire's adverse impacts on federal and private lands, including watersheds and cultural resources, while also working towards the ecological benefits of reintroducing fire into the ecosystem. The fire has resulted in a mosaic burn pattern, effectively cleaning the understory and reducing hazardous fuels.
The current response from fire agencies includes a total of 84 personnel actively working on the ground. The Northern New Mexico Incident Management Team is overseeing operations, with command set to transition back to the local Santa Fe National Forest Coyote Ranger District on June 18, 2024, at 7:00 AM. Planned actions involve continuing suppression repair and ongoing assessments to ensure the stability of the fire perimeter. Fortunately, no significant spread is anticipated in the next 24 hours, with minimal smoldering being the primary concern.
Weather conditions are expected to shift towards a warming and drying trend over the coming days, which could influence fire behavior. However, the current outlook indicates no immediate threats, allowing crews to focus on rehabilitation efforts and assessments post-fire. The incident is part of a larger strategy to improve species diversity and wildlife habitat, contributing to a healthier forest ecosystem while managing the risks associated with wildfires.
