Indios Wildfire (NMSNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Indios Wildfire, located approximately 7 miles north of Coyote, New Mexico, in the Coyote Ranger District within the Chama River Canyon Wilderness, has been burning since May 19, 2024. This lightning-ignited fire has consumed around 11,500 acres and is currently reported to be 90% contained. Fire management objectives focus on protecting critical resources while utilizing the fire's natural role within the ecosystem to promote ecological benefits, such as reducing hazardous fuel loads and enhancing wildlife habitats.

Firefighting efforts involve a team of 84 personnel who are engaged in maintaining the fire perimeter and conducting suppression repair operations. Minimal smoldering has been observed, indicating that the fire is largely under control with no anticipated spread over the next 24 hours. The Northern New Mexico Incident Management Team, under Incident Commander Luke McLarty, is set to transition control back to the Santa Fe National Forest Coyote Ranger District on June 18, 2024.

Weather conditions in the area are expected to trend warmer and drier in the coming days, which could pose challenges for continued fire suppression efforts. However, the current situation remains stable, and no significant fire activity is anticipated. The fire's low-intensity burn has created a mosaic effect across the landscape, effectively cleaning up the understory and improving forest health, which can help mitigate the risk of future catastrophic wildfires.
