Remington Fire (MTGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Remington Fire, which ignited on August 22, 2024, in Sheridan County, Wyoming, has spread significantly into southeastern Montana, impacting various counties including Powder River, Big Horn, and Rosebud. As of the latest update, the fire has burned a total of 196,368 acres and is currently 88% contained. Fire management has been transitioned to the Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 5, which is actively engaged in suppression and repair activities. The fire poses a risk to communities near the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and several small towns, including Quietus, Otter, and Birney.

Firefighting efforts are supported by a workforce of approximately 95 personnel who are conducting patrols and mopping up operations. The fire's activity has been characterized as minimal, with most of the fire exhibiting smoldering and creeping behavior, particularly in sheltered timbered areas. Weather conditions have been warm and dry, which may increase the potential for new fire starts from ongoing suppression activities. However, a cooling trend is expected, which will help reduce the likelihood of active fire behavior while allowing for the continued consumption of unburned fuels within the fire's interior.

Current weather forecasts indicate that moderate humidity recovery is anticipated overnight, along with light winds shifting to the southeast. A weak cold front is expected to bring isolated showers and thunderstorms, which could introduce gusty winds up to 40 mph and lightning, presenting additional challenges for fire management. The daytime temperatures are predicted to reach the upper 70s, with humidity levels increasing to 40-50%, which could aid firefighting efforts. The estimated containment date for the Remington Fire is projected to be September 16, 2024, as crews continue to focus on suppression and damage assessment activities.
