Wildfire Status:

As of September 16, 2024, the Ratio Mountain Fire, located approximately 15 miles northwest of Whitehall, Montana, has been actively managed with significant progress made in firefighting operations. Fire managers report that 85% of operational objectives have been completed, particularly on the eastern flank of the fire. Firefighters have successfully executed firing operations along established firelines, which cover about 60% of the fire's perimeter. The objective has been to contain fire spread, specifically keeping it west and north of these lines.

Efforts on the southern flank, which accounts for 10% of the perimeter, have focused on implementing structure protection measures near the St. Anthony mine site. All preparatory work for protecting structures is complete, and strategic efforts to guide the fire around these structures are currently 20% complete. The remaining 30% of the fire perimeter lies in rugged terrain that is difficult to access, posing challenges for firefighting resources and increasing the risk of medical emergencies for responders in those areas.

Weather conditions have played a role in the fire's behavior, with predictions indicating that isolated torching and creeping fire behavior may continue as the fire moves uphill and northwest. Fire managers remain vigilant, monitoring the situation closely, particularly in areas identified as critical values at risk. Planned actions for the coming days include continued monitoring and engagement of the fire as necessary while securing the east flank and maintaining the integrity of established firelines. Coordination among local officials, the Forest Service, and other agencies has been crucial in formulating effective strategies to manage this incident.
