2025 Max Fire (CASNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Max Fire, which ignited shortly after 1 PM today, is currently burning on the Sierra National Forest in Fresno County, California. The fire is located southeast of Barnes Mountain and northeast of Pine Flat Reservoir, and has grown to an estimated size of 428 acres, with only 5% of its perimeter contained. The fire is primarily consuming grass and oak woodland, and its rapid spread is being driven by steep, rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions.

In response to the fire, local authorities including the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office have implemented evacuation orders for visitors and campers in the Blue Canyon area. They have also established road closures on several routes, including Dinkey Creek Road, 10S17, Trimmer Springs Road, and 10S69 Big Creek Road. A comprehensive firefighting effort is underway, involving two large air tankers (LATs), multiple ground engines, and hand crews, with the Sierra National Forest designated as the lead agency for the incident.

Significant threats posed by the Max Fire include the potential to impact nearby residences, recreation areas, and power lines. Authorities are actively managing the situation with additional large air tankers on order and utilizing night-flying aircraft to combat the fire.
