Horton Fire 2024 (AZTNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horton Fire, currently burning in the Tonto National Forest and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest near Promontory Point, has been active since December 14, 2024. As of now, the fire has burned approximately 8,346 acres and is reported to be 94% contained. Firefighters have faced significant challenges due to the steep and rugged terrain, which has limited direct attack capabilities and prolonged extraction times for personnel. The fire was determined to be human-caused, and investigations are ongoing.

Firefighting efforts have been robust, involving both air and ground resources that have focused on maintaining containment lines in critical areas such as Promontory Butte and the Horton Creek drainage. The response has included the establishment of a Complex Incident Management Team, which took over operations on December 30, 2024, to better manage the incident as its complexity increased. Currently, the firefighting forces comprise approximately 107 personnel, including one crew, five engines, a bulldozer, and a water tender.

In terms of public safety, a forest closure order is in effect, and several local communities, including Christopher Creek and Tonto Creek Estates, are under a SET evacuation status due to the fire's proximity. Travelers in the area are advised to monitor road conditions as State Route 260 may experience reduced visibility from smoke.
