Horton Fire 2024
Wildfire Status:
The Horton Fire, which began on December 14, 2025, in the Tonto National Forest near Promontory Point, has expanded into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Firefighters from the Tonto National Forest-Payson Ranger District were the first to respond, and by December 16, an ad hoc Type 3 team was assembled to manage the situation. Ground and air resources have been actively engaged in suppressing the fire and establishing containment lines in challenging terrain, particularly within the Horton Creek drainage and on Promontory Butte, where rugged conditions have limited direct firefighting capabilities.
As the incident's complexity heightened, a Complex Incident Management Team was deployed to take over management of the fire. The Horton Fire is classified as human-caused, and the investigation is ongoing. The fire is primarily fueled by timber, chaparral, dry grasses, and understory shrubs, which contribute to its rapid spread and intensity. A forest closure order is currently in effect to ensure public safety and protect firefighting personnel involved in suppression efforts.
Evacuations have been ordered for several communities, including Christopher Creek and Tonto Creek Estates, which are currently under SET (Set Evacuation Status). Local roadways, including State Route 260, may experience reduced visibility due to smoke, and travelers are advised to stay updated on roadway conditions through the Arizona Department of Transportation. Additionally, a Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place until January 31, 2025, to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure safety in the airspace surrounding the fire.
