Horton Fire 2024 (AZTNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horton Fire, which ignited on December 14, 2024, in the Tonto National Forest near Promontory Point, has now spread to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. As of now, the fire is actively burning and has reached 100% of its perimeter containment as fire crews continue to manage the situation. The initial response involved firefighters from the Payson Ranger District, who quickly engaged the fire, and an ad hoc Type 3 team was established shortly thereafter to enhance firefighting efforts.

Firefighting operations have been complicated by the rugged terrain of the Mogollon Rim, which has hindered direct attack capabilities. Firefighters have been focused on securing containment lines and utilizing both air and ground resources effectively. The fire has been determined to be human-caused, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain its exact origins. The primary fuels driving the fire's spread include timber, chaparral, and dry grasses.

To ensure public safety, a forest closure order is in effect, restricting access to certain areas within the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Additionally, Temporary Flight Restrictions are in place around the fire area until January 31, 2025, to facilitate aerial firefighting efforts. The communities surrounding the fire, including Christopher Creek and Tonto Creek Estates, remain under a Set evacuation status due to potential threats from smoke and fire activity, with local roadways experiencing reduced visibility. Residents and travelers are advised to stay informed on road conditions and fire updates through the appropriate channels.
