Horton Fire 2024 (AZTNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Horton Fire, which ignited on December 14, 2025, in the Tonto National Forest near Promontory Point, is currently active and affecting both the Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The fire's progression has been complicated by the steep and rugged terrain of the Mogollon Rim, which has limited direct firefighting efforts. Firefighters have been actively engaged in constructing containment lines, particularly on Promontory Butte and within the Horton Creek drainage area. The fire is classified as human-caused, and an investigation is ongoing.

In response to the fire, an ad hoc Type 3 incident management team was established shortly after the fire started, and a Complex Incident Management Team was later brought in for better coordination as the situation escalated. The firefighting efforts have included both air and ground resources, but the challenging terrain has resulted in hazardous conditions and lengthy extraction times for personnel. A forest closure order is currently in effect to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting operations.

Local communities, including Christopher Creek and Tonto Creek Estates, are under SET evacuation status due to the fire's proximity and the potential for reduced visibility on surrounding roadways caused by smoke. A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in place until January 31, 2025, to ensure the safety of aerial firefighting operations. Residents and travelers in the area are advised to stay updated on fire status and road conditions through local authorities.
