Elk Fire 2024 (WYBHF)

Wildfire Status:

The Elk Fire, currently active in the Bighorn National Forest, was detected on September 27, 2024, approximately 15 miles northwest of Dayton, Wyoming. As of now, the fire has reached 100% containment, with firefighters utilizing a combination of ground crews, airtankers, and helicopters to effectively manage the situation. Recent weather conditions, including snow and rain, have significantly reduced the fire's intensity and behavior, allowing for more efficient containment efforts.

In terms of response, a Type 4 Incident Management Team has taken command of the fire, overseeing the operations and logistics involved in suppression efforts. Logging crews are actively relocating log decks along Forest System Road 26 to facilitate the ongoing containment operations. Fortunately, all evacuations in the impacted counties have been lifted, indicating a positive shift in the fire's management.

While much of the forest area has been reopened, there are still specific trail closures in place due to the fire. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay updated on road conditions and closures through the Wyoming Department of Transportation and to avoid using routes that interfere with logging operations.
