Wildfire Status:
The Cougar Creek Fire is currently active with 109 personnel working to contain the blaze, which has spread to 3,091 acres with 0% of the perimeter contained. The fire is located 1 mile west of Hwy 129 and the Grand Ronde river intersection. The fire is primarily fueled by timber, tall grass, and brush, leading to active fire behavior including spotting, uphill runs, and running.
The current weather conditions are a concern, with a disturbance moving north-northeast through the area. This weather pattern is expected to bring enough moisture and elevated instability for high-based showers and thunderstorms in central Oregon, spreading northward. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for abundant lightning in the area, except for the eastern Oregon mountain zones. Hot and dry conditions with poor to moderate overnight recoveries are expected for the rest of the week, along with breezy westerly winds through the Cascade gaps on Thursday afternoon.
The planned actions for the fire include continued establishment of containment lines, structural protection, and public information efforts. The projected incident activity anticipates fire growth to continue in steep terrain and rapidly carrying fuels, but this growth will start to be impacted by the arrival of suppression resources. The Cougar Creek Fire is under the command of CIMT Team 13 as of July 18, 2024, at 0600 hours.
