Pioneer (WASES)

Wildfire Status:

The Pioneer Fire, which started on June 8, 2024, is currently burning approximately 38,735 acres of land, with a containment level reported at 23%. The fire ignited on private land 31 miles northwest of Chelan, Washington, and has since spread to US Forest Service land, including wilderness areas. A full-suppression strategy has been implemented by fire managers to protect nearby private properties, public infrastructure, and natural resources. The suspected cause of the fire is human activity, prompting a strong response from fire agencies.

Firefighting efforts have been significantly challenged by the steep and remote terrain surrounding the fire, particularly on the east side of Lake Chelan, which is accessible only by boat or air. Initial direct tactics were employed but have since evolved into a combination of direct, indirect, and point protection strategies, focusing on high-probability success areas. Firefighters are actively establishing firelines and hose lays while utilizing aerial support, including water-dropping aircraft, to combat the flames. Assessments and protective measures are ongoing for structures around Lake Chelan and the Stehekin area, with particular attention to increasing defensibility against the advancing fire.

Current weather conditions are influencing fire behavior, with recent rainfall helping to decrease the flammability of large vegetation. However, as temperatures rise, there is potential for increased visibility of smoke due to smoldering logs and stumps within the fire perimeter. Firefighters are on alert to monitor and patrol the fire activity, prepared to adjust strategies as needed. Evacuation levels in Chelan County are being updated in response to changing fire activity, and several closure orders are in effect for the surrounding national forest and park areas. Visitors to Chelan and Manson are still welcome, with local businesses operating normally despite the ongoing situation.
