Upper Ruby (WACOF)

Wildfire Status:

The Upper Ruby Fire, located in central Pend Oreille County, Washington, is currently under active management as it has reached a containment level of 94% with a total perimeter of approximately 280 acres. The fire began on August 20, 2024, and has been characterized by creeping and smoldering activity primarily in medium logging slash and closed timber litter. As of the latest update, there are no reported structures destroyed, and no evacuations have been issued. The response involves approximately 186 personnel, with structure protection measures implemented for nearby residences.

Fire agencies are focusing on securing the fire lines and continuing mop-up operations. The incident management team, led by Incident Commander Andrew R. Stenbeck, has established measures to contain the fire while monitoring for potential hazards such as hot ash pits and timber snags. The anticipated completion of containment efforts is projected for September 10, 2024, with ongoing actions to ensure the fire is fully extinguished and safe for local jurisdictional control.

Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting efforts, although a ridge of high pressure is expected to build, leading to warming and drying trends. Temperatures are forecasted to reach around 70 degrees, with relative humidity dropping to approximately 37%. Light winds, between 1-5 mph, are expected, which will facilitate the ongoing work of fire crews, although night humidity recovery may be limited. As the Labor Day weekend approaches, temperatures are predicted to rise into the mid to upper 80s, potentially impacting fire behavior.
