Latest update
The Sutton 2019 Fire and Resort Fires started on the afternoon of February 27, 2026. The Sutton 2019 Fire is located approximately 6 miles east of Sonora and the Resort Fire is one mile northeast of Sonora. These two fires are located in Sutton County next to Highway 10 and were caused by a vehicle. The fires were initially responded to by local fire departments. Texas A&M Forest Service was requested to provide assistance in the form of additional firefighters and heavy equipment.
This fires started during a period of elevated fire weather, including higher than normal temperatures and low relative humidity. Critically dry fuels, combined with this weather have resulted in large fire potential through much of Texas.
Crews worked with heavy equipment to line the fires, with engines following behind to extinguish and start mopping up. The fires were staffed overnight with local volunteer fire department firefighters. Texas A&M Forest Service will return to the fires 2/28/2026. Texas Department of Emergency Management is assisting with traffic management.
As of the evening of 2/28/26, both fires are 100% contained. This is the last planned update for these fires.
