8 Ball Fire is the 3rd-largest wildfire this season in Texas, burning 9 miles south of Groom.

Texas A&M Forest Service was requested for assistance in Armstrong County on the afternoon of February 17th, 2026. The 8 Ball Fire started approximately 12 miles west of Clarendon along the Highway US 287 corridor. Texas A&M Forest Service resources including bulldozers, motor graders and multiple Strike Team of fire engines from Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) worked in unified command with local resources throughout the incident.
The City of Howardwick, in Donley County was ordered to evacuate due to the fast moving fire, pushed by west winds sustained at 25-35 mph and gusting to 45 mph shortly after the fire ignited
Forward progression of the fire at the head stopped shortly after dusk on Feb. 17, though containment efforts were hampered by high winds, active flames along the perimeter of the fire, and the remote and rough terrain.
The fire became 100% contained at 13,500 acres on February 21, 2026. This is the final planned update for the 8 Ball Fire.
