Willamette Complex Fires - South (ORWIF)

Wildfire Status:

The Willamette Complex Fires, previously known as the Oakridge Lightning Fires, are currently active in the Willamette National Forest, Oregon. Discovered after a significant lightning storm on July 17, the fires encompass several locations, spreading approximately 8 miles north to 22 miles south-southeast of Oakridge. The total area affected measures around 31,296 acres, with the Young Grasshopper Fire at 5,228 acres and 0% containment, while the 208 Fire has reached 11,201 acres with only 4% containment. Other fires in the complex, such as the Chalk and Coffeepot Fires, have been successfully contained at 100%, but the Moss Mountain Fire remains at just 10% containment.

Currently, a total of 178 personnel are actively working on managing the situation. The firefighting strategy involves monitoring and patrolling the fires, with specific actions planned for each of the active fires, such as mopping up and securing control lines. Despite minimal fire behavior observed recently, which includes flanking and creeping, significant concerns remain due to the fuels involved, which include closed timber litter and conifer timber with understory vegetation, making the area susceptible to fire activity.

Weather conditions have been a mixed bag, with above-normal temperatures and dry conditions persisting. High temperatures have ranged from the 60s to low 70s, with relative humidity levels dropping to 40-50%. However, a shift in the weather is anticipated with an active pattern expected to emerge, bringing cooler temperatures, increased humidity, and potential precipitation starting Tuesday evening. This change is likely to aid in fire suppression efforts, providing a much-needed respite from the dry conditions that have contributed to the fire's spread. Fire officials are hopeful that these weather changes will lead to improved containment efforts over the coming days.
