Wildfire Status:

The Sandstone Fire, ignited by a lightning strike on August 5, 2024, continues to pose a challenge in the Mt. Hood National Forest, specifically on the south side of Thunder Mountain, near Ripplebrook, OR. Currently, the fire has grown to 702 acres with approximately 75% of its perimeter contained. The incident management has transitioned to Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 10, which is actively employing a full-suppression strategy to protect private property and public infrastructure while managing the risks involved for both responders and the public.

Firefighting efforts are ongoing, with 93 personnel on the ground establishing firelines and hose lays, while water-dropping aircraft are deployed to assist in containment. The terrain is rugged and steep, which complicates firefighting efforts, particularly as the fire burns through areas previously affected by the 2006 Blister Fire. Although the fire is primarily contained, there remains a risk of it affecting nearby population centers in Clackamas County if it spreads significantly.

Recent weather conditions have aided firefighting efforts, with a low-pressure system bringing cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and occasional showers to the region. This has contributed to minimal fire activity, with only limited smoldering observed in available surface fuels. Forecasts indicate that the fire behavior will remain low in the coming days, with no significant perimeter growth anticipated. However, the Mt. Hood National Forest has enforced a closure order in the vicinity of the fire, restricting access to certain trails and recreation sites to ensure public safety.
