Wildfire Status:

The Buck Creek Fire, located approximately 13 miles southwest of Silver Lake, Oregon, has burned a total of 5,647 acres and is currently 39% contained. The fire began on September 7, 2024, in dense timber within the Yamsay Mountain Semi-Primitive Area and has been spreading north and east into managed timber stands with brush and grass understory. As of the latest reports, evacuation orders have been lifted by the Lake County Sheriff, although a forest closure order remains in place to ensure the safety of the public and firefighters.

Fire agencies are actively responding to the situation with a total of 572 personnel engaged in firefighting efforts. The Incident Commander, Steve North from the Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 10, is overseeing operations. The current strategy involves utilizing aerial suppression resources to slow the fire's spread, especially in high-priority areas. There are plans for continued monitoring of fire behavior, particularly in areas experiencing gusty winds, and the implementation of indirect containment strategies using natural barriers when feasible.

Weather conditions have been relatively favorable for firefighting efforts recently, with light precipitation observed prior to daybreak on September 18, leading to humidity levels above 50%. However, a shift in weather is expected, with high pressure bringing clear skies and warmer temperatures forecasted to reach between 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. While humidity levels will decrease to 15-25% during the day, good recovery is anticipated at night. Light and variable winds are predicted, which could help mitigate fire activity but may also present challenges as conditions begin to dry out. Firefighters remain vigilant as the potential for increased burning exists with the upcoming weather changes.
