Wildfire Status:

The Flat Top and Firestone fires, located north of Fort Rock, Oregon, are currently in a state of significant containment, with the Firestone Fire at 90% contained and the Flat Top Fire at 86%. The total area affected by the Firestone Fire is approximately 9,454 acres, while the Flat Top Fire has burned around 36,288 acres. As of September 22, 2024, command of the incident is being handed over from the Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 3 to a Type 4 Incident Commander, indicating a transition to a more localized management approach. No further updates are expected unless significant changes in the situation occur.

Currently, a total of 118 personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts, with planned actions that include conducting burn operations to strengthen containment lines and continuing mop-up efforts across primary lines. The fire behavior is being monitored closely, with assessments noting near-critical fire weather conditions that could facilitate short runs of surface fire. The fuels involved consist of dense stands of ponderosa pine and brush, with larger logs and stumps in the area that may remain receptive to fire.

Weather conditions are contributing to the situation, with afternoon temperatures reaching the low 70s and relative humidity dropping to between 18-23%. Winds are primarily out of the north-northeast at speeds of 5-8 mph, with gusts reaching up to 17 mph. Despite these warm and dry conditions, minimal fire growth is expected due to the existing containment lines. Fire management teams are also focused on protecting critical infrastructure and supporting local agencies as necessary. The projected containment date for these incidents is set for September 30, 2024.
