Wildfire Status:
As of September 22, 2024, two wildfires, the Firestone Fire and Flat Top Fire, are actively being managed in the vicinity of Fort Rock, Oregon. The Firestone Fire has burned approximately 9,454 acres and is currently 90% contained, while the Flat Top Fire has spread over 36,288 acres and is 86% contained. Fire management operations are transitioning from the Northwest Complex Incident Management Team 3 to a Type 4 Incident Commander, indicating a shift to a less complex management structure as the situation stabilizes.
Currently, there are 118 personnel involved in firefighting efforts. The fires are primarily fueled by dense stands of ponderosa pine and brush, with ongoing concerns about near-critical fire weather conditions. These conditions could lead to short runs of surface fire due to the presence of grasses and shrubs. Firefighters are focusing on securing containment lines and conducting mop-up operations along the fire perimeter to prevent any flare-ups.
Weather conditions are a significant factor in firefighting efforts. Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 70s, with relative humidity dropping to around 18-23% in the afternoons, which can exacerbate fire behavior. Winds are predominantly from the north-northeast at 5-8 mph, with occasional gusts reaching 14-17 mph. While current containment lines are expected to minimize fire growth, planned actions include controlled burns to further secure the fire's edges and protect critical infrastructure, such as power lines and grazing allotments. The estimated date for full containment is projected for September 30, 2024, although further updates will only be provided if significant changes occur.
