Battle Mountain Complex (OR97S)

Wildfire Status:

The Battle Mountain Complex, comprising the North Fork Owens and Monkey Creek Fires, has been actively managed since its inception on July 17, 2024. As of August 20, 2024, the fire has burned approximately 183,026 acres and is reported to be 94% contained. Fire behavior has largely been limited to smoldering, particularly in the canyons at the northern end of the fire. The incident remains under the command of the Southwest Area Management Team, led by Incident Commander Matt Rau.

Current firefighting efforts involve around 490 personnel who are focused on controlling the remaining perimeter, monitoring fire activity, and conducting suppression-repair work. Planned actions include improving control lines, constructing contingency lines, and ongoing assessments of fire behavior. Fire activity remains minimal, with no significant growth expected over the next several days. Weather conditions have been mostly sunny with highs ranging from the lower 70s to mid-80s, and afternoon humidity levels dropping to 15-20%, which are contributing to the smoldering fire behavior.

Looking ahead, the fire management team anticipates continued minimal smoldering in heavy fuels and dirty burn areas, especially along the northern edge. With no growth projected, the focus will remain on monitoring and ensuring that the fire does not expand. The estimated containment date is set for August 31, 2024, as crews continue to work diligently to secure the area and restore safety for the surrounding community.
