Battle Mountain Complex (OR97S)

Wildfire Status:

The Battle Mountain Complex, currently active near Ukiah, Oregon, consists of the North Fork Owens and Monkey Creek Fires, among others. This complex has expanded to cover a total area of 183,026 acres since its ignition on July 17, 2024. As of August 20, 2024, the containment efforts have made significant progress, with 94% of the perimeter secured. The command of the incident has transitioned to the Southwest Area Management Team, led by Incident Commander Matt Rau. Despite the containment success, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the estimated cost of fighting the fire has reached approximately $81 million.

The current firefighting response involves a substantial deployment of resources, including 490 personnel, 6 crews, 8 engines, 1 helicopter, 12 water tenders, and 5 dozers. Fire behavior is reportedly limited to smoldering, particularly in the canyons at the northern end of the fire area. Weather conditions have been mostly sunny with high temperatures ranging from the lower 70s to mid-80s, alongside afternoon humidity dropping to 15-20%. Winds have been light and variable in the morning, shifting to westerly by midday, with gusts observed between 15-25 mph later in the day. These conditions are being closely monitored as they can influence fire activity.

Looking ahead, the estimated containment date is projected for August 31, 2024, as crews continue to work on improving existing contingency lines and cleaning up areas affected by the fire. The fuel types involved include fully cured grasses in lower elevations and a mix of timber litter and understory in higher areas. Firefighters are focused on preventing any potential flare-ups while maintaining the integrity of containment lines established during the incident.
