Broom Canyon Fire (NVHTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Broom Canyon Fire, which ignited on July 29, 2024, is currently active in the Currant Mountain Wilderness, located nine miles east of Duckwater, Nevada. This lightning-caused wildfire has grown to approximately 8,345 acres but is only 15% contained. The terrain is steep and rugged, making direct firefighting efforts hazardous for personnel. As a result, the Ely Ranger District is implementing a confine and contain strategy, focusing on areas where firefighter safety can be assured. Firefighters are working on improving roads that serve as contingency fire lines to preemptively control the fire's spread should it move outside the designated planning boundary.

Currently, 89 personnel are on the ground managing the incident, focusing on locating safe opportunities for engagement and monitoring fire behavior. The fire is impacting a variety of fuels, including white fir, pinyon pine, and juniper, but is also leaving patches of unburned vegetation, creating a mosaic pattern across the landscape. The current weather conditions are not specified, but the smoke from the fire is visible to residents in nearby areas, and air quality may be affected. Fire officials anticipate that smoke and fire activity will persist into the fall until significant weather changes occur, such as the onset of snowfall.

Firefighters are closely monitoring the situation and have nearly completed the construction of contingency lines. They are also assessing the behavior of the fire to inform further actions.
