Broom Canyon Fire (NVHTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Broom Canyon Fire, which ignited on July 29, 2024, has spread to approximately 8,345 acres within the Currant Mountain Wilderness, located nine miles east of Duckwater, Nevada. The fire is currently exhibiting active behavior and is situated in steep, rugged terrain above 7,000 feet, making direct firefighting efforts impractical due to safety concerns. As a result, the Ely Ranger District is employing a "confine and contain" strategy, focusing on identifying safe areas for potential suppression actions while improving existing roads to serve as contingency fire lines should the fire spread westward.

As of now, containment efforts have only achieved 15% perimeter control, with 89 personnel assigned to manage the situation. The fire is fueled by white fir, pinyon pine, and juniper, creating a mosaic of burned and unburned vegetation. Firefighters are diligently assessing the fire’s behavior and working on establishing contingency lines around the perimeter. These actions are crucial as the fire is expected to remain active into the fall months, with smoke visible in nearby communities and along U.S. Highway 6.
