Broom Canyon Fire (NVHTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Broom Canyon Fire is currently active in the Currant Mountain Wilderness, located nine miles east of Duckwater, Nevada, and approximately 60 miles southwest of Ely. This lightning-caused wildfire began on July 29, 2024, and has consumed an area of 8,345 acres. As of the latest reports, the fire is only 15% contained due to its location in steep, rugged, and inaccessible terrain above 7,000 feet. The Ely Ranger District is managing the situation under a confine and contain strategy, focusing on ensuring the safety of firefighters while evaluating potential suppression opportunities.

Firefighting efforts are currently limited, as the area poses significant safety risks for personnel. No active suppression actions are being conducted at this time, but contingency plans are in place. Firefighters have been improving access roads that serve as contingency fire lines in case the fire spreads westward. A total of 89 personnel are currently involved in monitoring the fire's behavior and movement, while also preparing for potential escalation in fire activity.

Weather conditions are projected to influence fire behavior significantly in the coming days. The region is experiencing a combination of high gusty winds and low relative humidity, contributing to red flag conditions. Increased fire behavior, including creeping and isolated torching, is expected, particularly with temperatures returning to seasonal norms. Fire officials are closely monitoring these conditions, especially as the fire is anticipated to spread northward and potentially spot to the east. The focus remains on improving containment lines while assessing the fire's progression and managing any threats to nearby areas.
