Broom Canyon Fire (NVHTF)

Wildfire Status:

The Broom Canyon Fire is currently burning in the Currant Mountain Wilderness, located approximately nine miles east of Duckwater and 60 miles southwest of Ely, Nevada. As of the latest reports, the fire has consumed approximately 8,345 acres and is active within steep and rugged terrain above 7,000 feet. The fire was first reported on July 29, 2024, and is classified as lightning-caused. Due to the challenging landscape, fire suppression actions are not being undertaken at this time, as firefighter safety cannot be assured. Instead, fire management is employing a "confine and contain" strategy, focusing on identifying areas for safe suppression actions and improving contingency fire lines.

Currently, the fire is only 15% contained, with 89 personnel actively managing the situation. Firefighters are tasked with monitoring the fire's behavior and movement while working on contingency lines designed to protect areas outside the fire's current boundaries should it spread. The vegetation involved includes white fir, pinyon pine, and juniper, creating a mosaic of burned and unburned areas. Smoke from the fire is visible to residents in surrounding communities and on U.S. Highway 6, with the potential for increased smoke and fire activity expected as conditions persist into the fall.

Weather conditions are critical to the fire's behavior, and as such, ongoing assessments are being made to ensure the safety of personnel and the effectiveness of containment strategies. Firefighters are prepared to adapt their tactics based on real-time observations of weather patterns and fire dynamics.
