On July 17, 2024, a lightning storm ignited two fires in Great Basin National Park, namely the Mill Creek Fire and the Pyramid Peak Fire. The Mill Creek Fire, covering 0.1 acres, has been fully contained and controlled as of July 18. Additionally, a helicopter reconnaissance confirmed that the Pyramid Peak Fire, also 0.1 acres, has naturally burned out, with no active fire found at the reported location. Firefighters investigated reports of a fire near the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive and found no active fire in that area.

Currently, there are 10 personnel responding to the fires, with the total size estimated at 1 acre. The perimeter of the fire is 100% contained. The planned actions include monitoring both the Mill Creek Fire and the Pyramid Peak Fire. However, there are concerns about the weather, as thunderstorms are forecasted throughout the week, increasing the likelihood of additional fire starts due to lightning strikes. Fire agencies are on high alert to address any potential new fire incidents resulting from the adverse weather conditions.
