Frijoles Fire Active 2026

The Frijoles Fire, which started August 4th due to a lightning strike, is burning in steep terrain 5 miles west of Sierra Mosca, 3 miles southeast of Cundiyo, NM. Firefighter and public safety are the number one objective and the fire is being handled as a full suppression incident. 

Full containment will be a slow process as the terrain in the Pecos Wilderness is rugged and hazardous. Firefighter and public safety are the number one priority. The ability for firefighters to safely fight this fire depends on availability of rescue resources and adequate medical evacuation sites in the event a firefighter gets hurt on the fire line.

The temporary closure order has been rescinded, however in order to facilitate safe and efficient suppression efforts the public is asked to avoid the area of the fire and the Santa Cruz Overlook Rd and Campground.
