South Fork and Salt (NMMEA)

Wildfire Status:

The South Fork and Salt wildfires, originating on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, have burned significant areas near Ruidoso, New Mexico. As of June 19, 2024, the South Fork Fire covers approximately 17,569 acres and is 99% contained, while the Salt Fire has affected about 7,939 acres, also achieving 99% containment. Both fires were reported on June 17, with the South Fork Fire threatening the community of Ruidoso and prompting evacuation orders due to rapid growth within the first 24 hours.

Firefighting efforts have been robust, led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Mescalero Agency, which coordinated local wildland firefighters from various agencies. The Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5, under Incident Commander Dave Gesser, took command of the situation on June 19. As of the latest updates, the command has been transferred back to local units, indicating progress toward final suppression and repair of the affected areas.

Weather conditions have played a crucial role in the management of these fires, with the current fuels including brush, hardwood litter, and timber contributing to the fire's behavior. A South Fork Fire Emergency Closure Order has been issued to limit public access to specific national forest lands for the safety of firefighting personnel and the public. Additionally, the Lincoln National Forest has enacted Stage II fire restrictions to mitigate fire risks in the region.
