Antone Fire (NMGNF)

Wildfire Status:

The Antone Fire, which ignited on June 7, 2024, due to lightning, is currently active and has burned approximately 12,396 acres in the San Antone Canyon area of the Quemado Ranger District. The fire is primarily consuming ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forest, with a containment status of 91% at this time. Fire operations are being conducted with a confine and contain strategy, employing both direct and indirect suppression tactics to protect critical values at risk in the area.

As of now, there are 72 personnel engaged in firefighting efforts. The current fire behavior is described as minimal, primarily characterized by creeping and smoldering, with some unburned pockets igniting within the interior. Firefighters are focusing on holding specific roads and monitoring the fire's movement, particularly as it creeps towards critical infrastructure. Planned actions include securing the perimeter while ensuring the fire remains contained to designated areas.

Weather conditions pose a challenge for firefighting efforts, as extremely dry conditions are expected to persist, with relative humidity dipping to single digits. Light winds, with gusts reaching 20-25 mph in the afternoons, could potentially influence fire behavior. Although recent precipitation has moderated the fire's intensity, the risk remains for increased activity as winds align with the terrain. Fire management teams continue to adapt strategies based on these weather patterns to maintain control over the situation.
