Nevada Lake Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Nevada Lake Fire, currently active in Montana, has been officially declared contained as of October 15, 2024. This wildfire, which began as an escaped prescribed burn on October 14, has reduced in size from 208 acres to 190 acres following more precise GPS mapping. The fire is located eight miles east of Helmville, primarily affecting the Nevada Lake Wildlife Management Area and adjacent private lands. The incident is being managed by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC).

Firefighting efforts have focused on completing "mop up" operations, which involve extinguishing residual heat and hotspots within a 300-400 foot radius of the control lines. These operations are conducted methodically, utilizing techniques such as "cold trailing," where firefighters physically check for heat along the perimeter of the fire. As the situation stabilizes, local DNRC engines will conduct periodic patrols of the area.

Weather conditions are currently favorable for firefighting efforts, contributing to the successful containment of the fire. With the fire now fully contained, resources can be redirected to monitoring and ensuring that no new flare-ups occur. The ongoing management will ensure that the area remains secure and that any potential hazards are addressed promptly.
