Gravel Pit Fire (MTMTS)

Wildfire Status:

The Gravel Pit Fire is currently burning in heavy fuels on a mix of private and federal land near Highway 2 in Montana. The fire was human-caused and was first reported on August 1. Firefighters from Montana DNRC, USFS, and Fisher River Valley Fire Rescue are actively responding to the fire, which has shown spotting, torching, and active consumption of heavy fuels.

The fire is currently at 304 acres with 95% of the perimeter contained. There are 68 personnel working on the fire, focusing on mop-up activities, backhauling hose, and responding to any new fire starts. The weather conditions include cooler temperatures but very dry conditions, with relative humidity expected in the low teens. A wind shift to a more northerly direction is forecasted to remain in place over the fire through Sunday morning.

For the safety of firefighters and first responders, travel through the incident area along Hwy 2 should be avoided whenever possible. Extreme caution should be exercised if travel is necessary, with no stopping allowed along the highway due to impaired visibility from fire activity and smoke. The Western Montana All-Hazards Incident Management Team will transfer command of the fire to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
